چکیده

We have proposed a smoothing and rate adaptation algorithm–SAVE (Smoothed Adaptive Video over Explicit rate networks)– for transport of compressed video over rate-controlled networks. SAVE attempts to preserve quality as much as possible, and exercises control over the source rate only when essential to prevent unacceptable delay. In order to understand the impact on quality of rate adaptation, we have evolved the quality metrics typically used to evaluate the efficacy of mechanisms to transport video. In this paper, we investigate the dynamic nature of rate reduction: any prolonged impairment is likely to be noticeable. We study the sensitivity of SAVE to its parameters and network characteristics. Finally, the utility of the proposed scheme is measured by its ability to multiplex a large number of streams effectively. Our evaluations are based on experiments with 20 traces of entertainment videos using different compression algorithms. Keywords—Compressed Video, Rate Control, Smoothing, Multiplexing.

Smoothing, Statistical Multiplexing, and Call Admission Control for Stored Video

VBR compressed video is known to exhibit significant, multiple-time-scale rate variability. A number of researchers have considered transmitting stored video from a server to a client using smoothing algorithms to reduce this rate variability. These algorithms exploit client buffering capabilities and determine a “smooth” rate transmission schedule, while ensuring that a client buffer neither o...

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation

Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...

Models for packet switching of variable-bit-rate video sources

Packet switching of variable-bit-rate real-time video sources is a means for efficient sharing of communication resources while maintaining uniform picture quality. Performance analysis for the statistical multiplexing of such video sources is required as a first step towards assessing the feasibility of packet video. This paper extends our earlier work in modeling video sources which have been...

Scheduling and bandwidth allocation for the distribution of archived video in VOD systems

Providing cost-eeective video-on-demand (VOD) services necessitates reducing the required bandwidth for transporting video over high-speed networks. In this paper, we investigate eecient schemes for transporting archived MPEG-coded video over a VOD distribution network. A video stream is characterized by a time-varying traac envelope, which provides an upper bound on the bit rate. Using such en...

Smoothing Transcoded MPEG-1 Video Streams for Internet Transmission

This paper presents an efficient smoothing scheme for the real-time transmission of MPEG1 transcoded video over ‘best-effort’ IP networks. The scheme uses intelligent partitioning and multiplexing of the packetised bitstream. Bit-rate smoothing is achieved by partitioning packets according to their picture type (I, P or B). Subsequently, the partitioned packets are multiplexed in such a way tha...
